Moraine was WET!

We knew it was going to rain on us yesterday....but we were hoping for a couple hours before it started.  I think we almost made it out of the parking lot before it actually did.  Every time I ride Moraine it's either raining or saturated in 200% humidity, either way I'm soaked within minutes of riding.  Felt pretty good, and cleared a lot more than I ever had....really good considering my Heckler felt like crap.  I think I need some serious suspension work on that thing.  Well until the next outing...enjoy.

A great Saturday in Pittsburgh

This morning a large group of volunteers cleaned up and planted trees and grasses along Nine Mile Run in Frick Park.  It was a workday organized by the Nine Mile Run Watershed Association and the Pittsburgh Parks Department.  I'm guessing there were about 75 volunteers and we got a ton done.

I had to leave a little earlier than most so I could make it out to North Park for a mountain bike ride.  Todd and Stacey hosted a fast paced 14 mile tour of the park.  The conditions were awesome, the weather was perfect, and the company was great.

Lyme time...

This movie should scare everyone who spends time outdoors.

Look for ticks to be most active in moist conditions, as they are susceptible to drying out.  Cover skin and use a repellent that contains DEET, lemon eucalyptus oil, or permethrin.  It's actually better to apply these repellents to your clothing if possible, as they stay adhered longer to fabrics. Permethrin can last for a month or so when applied to garments, even through a few cold water washes.

I think I'm going to wear long pants and cover myself with DEET on all rides from now on!  I mean look at Dan's leg after riding Raystown last year!  ACK!

North Park was great!

I was pretty surprised at the trails in North Park last night.  Even with the recent rain, we didn't run across much mud in the park.  It was a fun, albeit slower than the usual, Wednesday night ride.  We got in about 11 miles and headed over to the Hop House for beers afterward.
Another great night of riding with friends.  Life is good.

Great news for cyclists in Pittsburgh

City Council passed legislation yesterday requiring bike parking based on square footage/tenants.

Frick Park

Joe and I hit up Frick Park for a little mid afternoon ride.  It was a little wet from last night's rain, so without further ado...

Roaring Run

Don, Tawni, Mark, Jim and I rode Roaring Run in Apollo yesterday.  Conditions were great, water was extremely high and fast in the Kiski River.  We 'only' did 14 miles, but it was a hard earned 14 as those familiar with Roaring Run can attest to.

A dry ride in Frick Park!

It seems like just yesterday there was 4 feet of snow on the ground, yet tonight we enjoyed a relatively dry ride in Frick Park.
Of course there are still a lot of downed trees, and the occasional mud puddle...but, man was it nice to be kicking up a little dirt!

Rainy Day Urban

Yesterday Don, Mike, Mark, and Tawni did a 16 mile urban ride to check out all the flooding, and get outside...plus it was Tawni's birthday. Happy Birthday Tawni!
Really amazing how much flooding there was downtown!
